The lagoons of New Caledonia are delimited by the longest continuous coral reef in the world; and since 2008, six locations (covering more than 15,000 km2) have been registered as UNESCO World Heritage sites: the Entrecasteaux reef area, the Grand Lagon Nord area, the northern and eastern coastal area, the Ouvéa and Beautemps-Beaupré island area, the western coastal zone and the Grand Lagon Sud area.
The BCI is convinced of the importance of protecting the natural assets that surround us, of raising public awareness and promoting green tourism in New Caledonia, and is therefore proud to present its Immersion au cœur du lagon project, run by Odyssey Diving New Caledonia.
It is an ambitious programme whose aim is to map (in photos and 360-degree videos) the seabed of several New Caledonian nature reserves.
The result of this extraordinary work will be published and viewable on Google Street View once the expedition is complete.
Sadly, Covid has delayed the launch of the project, which is being conducted in partnership with teams from Australia.
To continue its awareness-raising mission, the BCI is working alongside Odyssey Diving New Caledonia to create a series of video mini-capsules presenting the diversity and specific character of the lagoons of New Caledonia.
